HASBUN Consulting is founded on more than 30 years of professional experience developed across the environment, infrastructure, agriculture and veterinary medicine, specialized marine and underwater operations, agricultural health, and multidisciplinary project direction.
That experience belongs to its founder, Alex Hasbun, whose career combines technical fieldwork, executive leadership, consulting, public service, and institutional and international representation.
BIOGRAPHY
Alex Michel Hasbun Gadala Maria
Veterinarian and Animal Scientist, technical consultant, and project director with more than 30 years of professional experience in marine and underwater operations, infrastructure, the environment, conservation, agriculture, agricultural health, and multidisciplinary project direction.
His career has spanned technical fieldwork, executive leadership, consulting, and public service—a combination that has enabled him to approach projects from a practical perspective: first understanding the real conditions of the problem, identifying the technical capabilities required, and coordinating teams and institutions to carry solutions through to implementation.
A career built through field experience
Alex began his career as Director of SUBATEC S.A. de C.V. (1995–2008), participating in and directing specialized underwater operations, hydroelectric infrastructure projects, work in ports and maritime facilities, underwater cleaning operations in lakes in El Salvador, and agricultural consulting engagements.
Direct work around vessels, ports, hydraulic infrastructure, and submerged environments established a technical foundation characterized by practical judgment, adaptability, and the ability to solve problems under complex field conditions.
His experience includes projects connected with Puerto CORSAIN, Puerto de La Unión, and Puerto de Acajutla, as well as hydroelectric infrastructure and other specialized underwater operations.
He is a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, certified since 1996, with specializations related to reef conservation, underwater naturalism, fish identification, and night diving, among others. He also has technical training in the repair of diving equipment and high-pressure compressors, as well as gas blending, completed in Florida, United States.
Environment, biodiversity and conservation
His technical experience evolved toward environmental management, research, and biodiversity conservation. As Executive President of the Fundación Zoológica de El Salvador (FUNZEL, 2008–2013), he directed the USAID-funded program for sea turtle conservation and the improvement of quality of life in coastal communities.
This work included research and conservation initiatives for the hawksbill turtle in the eastern Pacific, connected with a scientific publication in the journal Oryx in 2010. The program became the largest sea turtle conservation program in Latin America.
His environmental career later continued within the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, where he held various responsibilities, including National Wildlife Manager, Specialist Technical Advisor to the Minister’s Office, and Chief of Technical Cabinet.
He also served as an advisory delegate on water issues at the Presidential Office and, from November 2019 to 2020, as Vice Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, following his appointment through Agreement No. 526 of the Presidency of the Republic of El Salvador.
Institutional and international representation
His work in the public sector included representing El Salvador in international forums related to the environment, biodiversity, and cooperation.
In October 2019, he participated in the First High-Level Conference of the Americas on Illegal Wildlife Trade, held in Lima, Peru, contributing to dialogue and the establishment of regional alliances to combat illegal trafficking in species.
He also participated in multiple negotiations at the United Nations in New York related to marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, expanding his experience from the technical execution of projects into international representation, negotiation, and institutional coordination processes.
Agriculture, veterinary medicine and agricultural health
His training as a Veterinarian and Animal Scientist has been a constant thread throughout his career. In 2021, he served as Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, subsequently strengthening this dimension of his experience through a specialized regional organization.
On September 21, 2021, he was sworn in as the Representative in El Salvador of the Organismo Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (OIRSA), a responsibility he held until 2024.
From this position, he supervised areas across Central America related to food safety, plant health, and animal health, and coordinated national and international biosecurity actions aimed at preventing the entry of diseases of human and agricultural importance, including African swine fever and avian influenza.
During this period, he also led the establishment of the Airport Biosafety Logistics Center at El Salvador International Airport “San Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez,” strengthening quarantine services and health protection capacity at one of the country’s principal points of entry.
Environmental communication and outreach
Communication has also formed part of his professional work. From January 2016 and throughout 2017, he designed, structured, and hosted Impacto Ambiental, a one-hour television program dedicated to environmental issues, broadcast daily on Canal 19.
For this work, he received the “Environmental Communicator of the Year 2016” award and international recognition from the Center for Marine Conservation in the United States for his work related to coastal cleanup.
He has also participated as a speaker and author of articles related to sustainability and diving tourism.
